Making homemade dog treats for your favorite 4 legged furry friend couldn’t be easier! Peanut butter and pumpkin make for a treat your pup will LOVE!

Homemade Dog TreatsA couple of weeks before we picked up Rooney from the dog breeder, Brian and I started to get our apartment puppy ready.  In addition to purchasing a couple of necessities (leash, collar, puppy food, dog bowl), we made sure non-puppy friendly things were moved from low places, light sockets were covered, and I whipped up a batch of these dog treats!

Homemade Dog Treats

My mom gave me this recipe back when we first got Bernie.  Not only does Bernie LOVE these treats, but they are made with everyday ingredients that you probably already have hanging around in your pantry.

The recipe makes quite a bit of dough, so I usually make about a cookie sheet’s worth and then store the rest of the dough in the freezer for use at a later date.

You can make them in any shape you want.  I typically make them in a smaller shape that is about the size of a quarter or a little bigger, but I saw these dog-shaped cookie cutters at Williams Sonoma and couldn’t resist making treats with it!  (It’s technically a lab but looks kind of like a Vizsla if you ask me!)

Homemade Dog Treats

It took a lot of patience for Bernie to sit on the couch with one of his favorite treats resting next to him!

You can tell how much he enjoyed it once I gave him the go ahead.

In the bottom two pics he was searching for more 🙂

I also want to point out that these would make a wonderful homemade gift for a dog-loving friend!  Each year my family makes homemade gifts for one another, and I’ve been pretty tempted to make these dog treats for many members of the family!

That being said, I love keeping a good secret…so family if you are reading, I bet you’re wondering if I actually made the treats for you or not 😉

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup canned pumpkin
  • 3 Tbsp peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
  2. Mix together the flour, salt and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, pumpkin and peanut butter.
  4. Combine the wet and dry mixtures together until thoroughly combined. Add water as needed to make the dough workable. The dough should be dry and stiff.
  5. Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface about a half inch thick and cut into any shape you want with a cookie cutter. Bake about 40-50 minutes or until the treats are hard and crunchy.
  6. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

This makes a lot of dog treats. I typically make half the batch and freeze the other half of the dough for use at a later date.
