Working with students who have limited kitchen appliances and busy professionals with limited time on Butler University’s campus has shed some light on the importance of finding healthy convenience food.   I have been on a mission to find healthy and nutritious convenience food options and college students are the perfect examples of this!

When purchasing convenience foods and prepared foods, it is important to read labels and packaging so you know what you are purchasing and what is in the prepared food you are buying.

Sweet Earth Foods is a great option for a nutritious frozen meal option!

Here are a few things I consider when looking for healthy convenience food:

3 Things to Look for When Buying Convenience Food

Look at sodium content.

A lot of prepared and convenience foods will be higher in sodium because it is used as a preservative and it enhances flavor.  When purchasing an entire meal, it may be a good idea to try to buy something that has around 600mg or less. While sodium can make your food taste better, not having it in there can be just as delicious and so much healthier!

Many of the Sweet Earth Foods frozen meals fall into this category!  They rely on ingredients like ginger, cayenne, curry, and chili peppers for flavor.

Look for protein and fiber.

Protein and fiber both slow down the digestion process, so they will help you stay full until your next meal.  If the meal is lacking in fiber, consider adding fresh vegetables, steamed vegetables, legumes, or whole grains to the prepared dish to help give it a little more filling staying power.

The Sweet Earth Foods meals contain many real food ingredients like broccoli, tomatoes, corn, peppers, black beans, tofu, sweet potatoes, seitan or brown rice allowing them to be filling, satisfying, and a good source of fiber and protein.  And they really taste delish!!

Look at the portion size.

Is the portion size what you are looking for?  Maybe eat half of the prepared meal and save the other half for later, or maybe you need to add something to the meal to make it a little more satisfying like a fresh or frozen veggie. This will totally depend on the person, day, time of day, etc so the important thing here is to listen to your hunger and fullness cues.  Basically, eat more if you are still hungry and save some for later if you are full and satisfied. It’s all about listening to you and your body while eating!

The meals from Sweet Earth Foods have a variety of flavors and textures in addition to protein and fiber, making them delicious and very satisfying!
