I am never going to the grocery store again to buy applesauce ever….
OK, that may be a little bit extreme, but when you realize how EASY and QUICK making your own unsweetened applesauce is at home you will consider never going back to the store bought stuff as well!
After Brian and I went apple picking, and came home with 10lbs of apples for the two of us all I could do was think about potential apple recipes.
I mentioned to a co-worker that we had apples up to our eyeballs and she said that she made a fabulous and easy applesauce. When she explained that the ONLY ingredients were apples, water and lemon juice to prevent the apples from browning…I was so on board! Even though she explained how easy making this treat was to me, I really didn’t “get it” until I made and it was done. Seriously, you will be shocked that it is done so quickly, AND impressed because it tastes better than any store bought applesauce ever.
Yields: 1 cup of applesauce
Use a vegetable peeler! So much easier in my opinion, and less of a chance of cutting yourself 🙂
2. Once the apples are cut into large chunks, place your water in a large sauce pan on set it to boil. As soon as the water is boiling add your apples and lemon juice, set the timer for 5 minutes (or until the apples are tender).
3. Allow the water to cook out of the pan. When the timer beeps, take the apples and place them in a food processor, blender, or use an immersion blender to create the sauce. Because the apples are so tender it won’t take much here. Just a couple of pulses until you have your desired consistency.
4. Take a spoon and try your homemade applesauce. I promise you will love it!
You can store this in a sealed container in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
I typically use it in baking as an oil substitute, but I also like to top it with fruit and nut butter as a breakfast alternative to Greek yogurt 🙂
