Homemade Unsweetened Applesauce is an incredibly easy recipe to make. Once you’ve made homemade applesauce, I don’t think you’ll ever reach for the store-bought version again. This recipe is very simple, absolutely delicious (no sweetener needed!) and the perfect way to use apples after a day at the orchard.

This recipe was originally posted October 2013, but the photos and instructions were updated in October 2020.

This year, we took Marie to her first apple orchard back in September. Visiting the orchard was absolutely so fun, and when we came home with a half bushel of apples I immediately remembered this recipe for unsweetened applesauce I shared on the blog 7 years ago! My how time flies…

Unsweetened Applesauce Tips

  • I have had luck using any variety of apples. I typically pick apples that I enjoy eating and the applesauce always turns out wonderful.
  • To prepare this applesauce recipe you will need a medium sauce pan, food processor/immersion blender/blender, knife, vegetable peeler, containers to store the applesauce. It really doesn’t require any fancy equipment.
  • This applesauce is naturally gluten free, dairy free and plant-based but apples are not low FODMAP. According to the Monash University App, depending on the variety of the apple less than 25g is considered low FODMAP.
  • I like very creamy and smooth applesauce, but if you want a more chunky version simply don’t blend it as much.
  • To make cinnamon applesauce, add a few dashes of cinnamon just before blending.

How to Serve Unsweetened Applesauce

You can use homemade applesauce the same way you would use store-bought applesauce. You can enjoy it as a snack or use it in any recipe that calls for applesauce as an ingredient.

Unsweetened Applesauce Nutrition

  • Apples: Provide the body with fiber, vitamin C and many other nutrients!
  • Lemon juice: A minimal amount of lemon juice is used to balance the sweetness of the apples and prevent the applesauce from turning brown.

Description

Homemade Unsweetened Applesauce is an incredibly easy recipe to make. Once you’ve made homemade applesauce, I don’t think you’ll ever reach for the store-bought version again. This recipe is very simple, absolutely delicious (no sweetener needed!) and the perfect way to use apples after a day at the orchard.

Ingredients

Scale

4 peeled and cored apples (small to medium)

1 cup water

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Cinnamon to taste, optional

Instructions

  1. Peel the apples with a vegetable peeler, then core them and cut into large chunks.
  2. Once the apples are ready, place water in a large sauce pan on high heat and cover with a lid. When the water is boiling, add the apples and lemon juice and set a timer for 5 minutes. The apples will be done when they are tender and slide right of a fork when pierced.
  3. Place the apples and cooking liquid in a food processor or high powered blender and blend until you have your desired consistency. Blend longer for a super creamy applesauce.
  4. You can add a little cinnamon to taste and blend it into the applesauce if you want, or you can enjoy it plain.
  5. Store the applesauce in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week, or store in the freezer.
