low FODMAP Homemade Taco Seasoning

Mexican food is a staple in our house.  Each week, as I make the grocery list and plan our meals I ask Brian if he has any requests and without fail he always asks for some form of Mexican.  Fish tacos, burritos, fajita burrito bowls, no-tortilla chicken soup, chili, or green Chile always have a way of making it onto the weekly menu.

And I’m not complaining! We LOVE Mexican food and without fault, will eat it any day of the week!

Growing up, I feel like we had a build-your-own burrito or nacho bar at LEAST once a week.  That type of food is just comforting to me and it’s so easy to make it healthy (load up on ALL the veggies!).  The biggest challenge?  Finding options that are low FODMAP.

Good luck finding a traditional taco or burrito without garlic and onions.

But I don’t back down to a challenge, especially when it means making a recipe Low FODMAP. Because of this, I created a solution to my problem with this low FODMAP Homemade Taco Seasoning. All the wonderful flavors of Mexican food that we all enjoy, but in a delicious low FODMAP way.

This homemade seasoning actually came about in an accidental way.  I was attempting to make taco seasoned shredded chicken and the spices I used were SO delicious I decided to bump up the amounts used  to make enough to have a low FODMAP homemade taco seasoning to keep on hand.

  1. Figured since discovering this recipe 2 years ago and faithfully coming back to it, I can at least review. This is the most flavorful and best taco seasoning I’ve yet to come across. Premade, store brought ones are just bland for me now—they literally have no spice, just salt. This mix, though, yum! The only thing I still haven’t figured out yet—heh heh—is if it’s better to add to the meat before browning or after. I do both but I find I lose a lot of spice when draining. Which means I use a lot more of my supply than what’s probably optimal. ☹️ If I could get the opinion of the wonderful author, when do you incorporate this seasoning in the cooking process? Thanks so much for discovering and sharing this!

    • I’m so glad you like it! Sorry for the delayed response 🙂 I typically don’t drain the meat because I use ground chicken or turkey, but I would suggest adding the spice after you drain the meat so you don’t lose it 🙂

    • It does last a while! Of course it depends on the expiration date of the spices you use to make it, but it should last quite some time (but we usually use it pretty frequently!)

  2. I recently found out I was allergic to foods in the allium family (onions and garlic) and was missing my Mexican food that are usually seasoned with onions and garlic. Your taco seasoning was fabulous!!! I just omitted the chives. We used it to make chicken fajitas and my family liked it even more than our usual seasoning that we put on our fajitas.
