I had HEARD of French hot chocolate for quite some time, so when Brian and I traveled to France this past September I couldn’t wait to try this authentic and rich chocolatey treat. The buzz was absolutely right…there is something special about thick French hot chocolate that makes it absolutely crave-able. I loved it so much that I couldn’t wait to get home and work in the kitchen to create my own homemade Low FODMAP French Hot Chocolate.

Low FODMAP French Hot Chocolate Tips

For this hot chocolate, I use a combination of full fat coconut milk and unsweetened almond milk. Canned coconut milk is low FODMAP in 1/4 cup serving and almond milk is low FODMAP in a 1 cup serving, keeping both of these measurements for the recipe within the guidelines of the Monash University App.

I prefer to use a dark chocolate to keep the sweetness at just the right amount and low FODMAP. You can use 85% dark chocolate or a dairy free dark chocolate like the kind from Enjoy Life Foods. Chopped dark chocolate or dark chocolate chips will work great (and using the chips may save a little time!).

This French Hot Chocolate is warm, decadent, and perfect for sharing with anyone who LOVES hot chocolate.

Description

The hot chocolate in France is thick, rich, and absolutely perfect. After our recent French vacation, I knew I had to come home and make a low FODMAP French Hot Chocolate to enjoy in the chilly weather.

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup whole fat canned coconut milk (link to my favorite brand)

1 cup almond milk

2 teaspoons powdered sugar

½ teaspoon espresso powder

8 oz dark chocolate (I like 85%), chopped (or dairy free dark chocolate)

Whipped cream (½ cup is considered low FODMAP), optional for serving

Instructions

In a medium saucepan over medium heat whisk the coconut milk, almond milk, powdered sugar and espresso powder until it starts to bubble around the edges.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the chopped chocolate until it is completely melted. If the chocolate isn’t melting all the way, you can return the pan to a low heat until the chocolate is completely melted.

Serve hot or warm with whipped cream if you want.

Notes

This recipe has not been tested for FODMAPs, but all ingredients are used in amounts compliant with the Monash University app.
