Growing up, my family made quick breads, muffins, and biscuits, but the thing we loved to bake most of all? Cookies!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Tips

  • It’s a must to start with softened butter. Put the butter on the counter an hour or two before you plan to start baking so it really has time to soften. I promise, it makes a difference.
  • Dark brown sugar and light brown sugar are interchangeable here. I’m sure if you tasted a cookie with dark brown sugar next to a cookie with light brown sugar you could probably taste a difference, but they are both going to be delicious 🙂
  • This recipe makes a lot of cookies! Once cooled, I love storing extra cookies in the freezer so we have cookies at the ready for those moments when you just need a cookie.
  • These cookies are not low FODMAP, gluten free, dairy free, etc they are just the best chocolate chip cookies ever. If you need to swap in gluten free flour, use a 1:1 gluten free flour blend that you can swap in cup for cup for the all purpose wheat flour. I’ve done this several times with great results.

This classic chocolate chip cookie recipe really is the best! My family has been making this recipe for years and it gets rave reviews every single time.



1 1/2 cups butter, softened

1 cup sugar

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

2 eggs, room temperature

1 Tablespoon vanilla (I always put a little extra!)

3 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

12 oz bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips


Preheat the oven to 375.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, sugar, and brown sugar until creamy.  Then, add eggs one at a time and vanilla until thoroughly combined.

In a separate bowl combine the flour, salt , and baking soda.  Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, constantly scraping down the sides of the bowl to make sure that everything gets mixed in.

Once the batter in completely mixed, add in the chocolate chips.  Scoop the dough into little balls on an ungreased cookie sheet (you can determine the size).

Bake for approximately 10 minutes, or until golden brown.  Remove from oven and allow to cool on a piece of wax paper.


I prefer to use a tablespoon size scoop when making these cookies.
